I've been reading the information presented on Metabolic Effect and trying to decide how I want to implement what I'm learning. I'm a believer in changing small things at a time. Today was a new beginning and change.

One of the things I'm reading is that you can increase your fat burning via exercise by combining your cardio and weight training. Doing small bursts of cardio while also doing your weight training. So, instead of doing my 40 mins of cardio and 30 mins of lifting, I did 10 mins of cardio, two lifting routines, and continued this until I had done all of my cardio and lifting. Here's how it went:

10 mins cardio - treadmill - walking for a min (3.3), then jogging for a min (4.0). Burned 70 cals
Leg Presses (3 x 12 @ 180 lbs), Leg Curls - (3 x 12 @75 lbs.)
10 mins cardio - treadmill - walking for a min (3.3), then jogging for a min 4.2. Burned 75 cals
Floor Calf raises (3 x 12). Hanging Knee raises (3 x 6)
10 mins Elliptical - 110 cals
Hip Abductor Machine - 3 x 12 @140, Hip Adductor Machine - 3 x 12 @140
10 mins Ellipitical - 110 cals
Back Extensions (supermans!) - 3 x 10 with 5lbs

Now, I'm not sure if I burned more fat, I think this will take time to see. But my observations...

1. I sweated more than I have in some time in the gym. I wear a bandana and it was drooping from the sweat. I finally had to take it off.
2. My heart rate was up for the entire hour +. Usually, it's up for the cardio part, but I don't really breathe heavy while I'm lifting.
3. I did feel rushed. I'm sure this was due to the unknown, and the "I have to keep my heart rate up" feeling, but I think next time I'll slow down more on my lifting.
4. Finished in the same amount of time as I normally would.

Let's see what happens. One of my goals this year was to take measurements every month. I'm going to take my first set this weekend, and see how this does over the next few weeks.

It's been too long since I last posted. Lots going on....

- Been working on a new project at work, and it's been fun. However, our approach has been more fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants. That causes a lot of headaches for my team, as we do the training and implementation. Nothing says fun like organized chaos.

- My weight loss has stalled, but that's been my fault. I have been eating waaaaayyyy too much when it comes to sweets. I'm trying to make it though the holiday without going totally crazy, and I can do that. Just have to stay true to what I know how to do.

- We're going to my home on the coast of NC this week, and I'm beside myself excited to be going home. We're also going to leave a bit early from there and stay the night in Raleigh one night, attempting to see as many friends as I can. Then it'll be back to GA. A long road trip, but it'll be my last one for a while.

- Met with my exercise physiologist this past weekend and she gave me some excellent stretches for my hips. I have VERY tight hips, and it's causing my back to go south too.

I hope to post more soon.

Different Day, Different Body [Nov. 10th, 2010|11:08 am]

Time change in the Fall usually doesn't bother me too much. Yea, I'm bit tired like everyone else, but really, I keep on going. I guess that's not the case this year. Last night, I fell asleep while watching tv with Eli. This was about 8:45pm, very early for me (as I usually have another two hours before I hit the sack.) I didn't realize I had fallen asleep until I woke at 11 ish, and Jay was getting ready for bed. Good GRIEF!! I woke up enough to brush my teeth, and crash again. I didn't stir again until about 5am. My alarm goes off at 5:20, so no big deal.

When my alarm did go off, I found myself just wanting to lay still. Usually I get on up, as I've never used a snooze. I just can't get back to sleep, so I've never used it. I eventually do get on up and head to the gym. It was so hard today. I felt like I was walking though mud the whole time. I did the cardio part of my workout, and feeling a bit defeated, I headed to the locker room. On the way I run into my friend Cathy, and told her about my morning... the no energy, the going to bed early, etc. She said someone quoted to her one time "different day, different body." You can't get 100% at every workout, every day. It's so hard to be reminded of that.

I'm so glad I ran into her. I went on off to the locker room, feeling not defeated, but ok with the fact that on this day, I didn't hit all of my workout, and it's ok.

I then ran into another gym acquaintance, and she complimented me on how good I was looking. Now, that was just the boost I needed. I guess it all works out well anyway.

I've spent the last three weekends dedicated to football. First, I had friends in town for the Ga. Tech game, and while we were at home, our schedules were still messed up, leaving Eli with his Nanny. The past two weekends, I traveled to Raleigh for football. As of Sunday, I'm tired. And I realized while I do love my time traveling, watching football and visiting with family and friends, it's taken it's toll... on all of us. I need this weekend to establish our normalcy, our routines, and it's welcomed.

We're also in official get ready for Pig Picking mode. This means getting the house ready for about 60 people. If the weather holds, and there's no rain, most of the event will be outside. However, you cannot plan on dry weather, and so we have to get ready for that many people in the house. We've only got a few hours of work to do (basically clearing a room, runs to Goodwill, etc.) but we need to get it done. Tomorrow morning we'll hit that, and hopefully on Sunday, we'll get a chance to just be. No plans, just exist.

On a more personal level, I've hit a big plateau on my weight loss, and I knew it was coming. While I attempt to embrace it, it was tough to handle, more so than I wanted it to be. I went to a support meeting, and was reminded again, that I need to be able to make this work. I was eating poorly, and it was showing. So, with that in mind, and a renewed sense of responsibility (thanks support group), I started fine-tuning and applying what I already knew... what to eat. I also got a fill, and the surgeon said it was definitely time. With all of that together, I got on the scale this morning... I lost 4lbs this week! That puts me at 65 pounds since the New Year! I do not think I've had as much spring in my step in a while, and it feels GREAT! Got more compliments today than I have in a while too. Someone actually called me "skinny." Dear Gods, that feel fantastic.
